The 51-year-old pleased with Greenwich Borough test and full of praise for forward Abrahams

Steve Davis expects plenty of clubs to watch Leyton Orient’s talented youngsters, but believes the best place for them to develop is at Brisbane Road.

The O’s claimed a third consecutive pre-season victory with a 2-1 win at Isthmian South outfit Greenwich Borough yesterday.

Davis handed minutes to several of O’s academy graduates and reiterated his desire to nurture their talent this season.

A report in the Evening Standard on Friday revealed Crystal Palace and Brighton & Hove Albion were interested in Tristan Abrahams.

But with the 18-year-old having just nine first-team appearances to his name, Davis feels playing regularly at Orient would be most beneficial for the teen.

“There is some speculation at the moment regarding Tristan, but I have had no contact with anyone,” said Davis.

“If you have got young players people are going to look at them and there is probably four or five in that category anyway that people will speculate about or come and watch.

“Tristan has been the centre of attention recently and he has a lot of ability, but for me he is not quite ready to move on yet. He needs longer here and to learn the game a little bit more and I am sure I can help him do that.

“He also needs to grow because he is an 18-year-old with huge promise and potential, but if a player has his head turned it can be to their detriment, although to be fair to him he didn’t show any signs of that against Greenwich.

“I thought he showed a good attitude and worked hard and is a level-headed boy like they all are, so I don’t see any problems going forward.

“As I say, when you have good players people are going to watch them so it is how I manage that with them and how they manage it going forward.”

Davis was speaking after O’s victory at the DGS Stadium and he praised Greenwich following the match.

Gary Alexander’s side pushed Orient all the way in south London despite trailing after two minutes to a David Mooney header.

Macauley Bonne added a second for the visitors early in the second half before Jack Sammoutis pulled one back for Borough.

The Orient head coach was happy to see his team win again and for his players to be pushed hard, adding: “It was tough and it was what we wanted really at this stage.

“We have still got a couple of weeks to go and three games, but midway through pre-season that was the toughest we have had it in terms of the match and the opposition.

“All credit to Greenwich Borough for putting on a really good show and making it difficult for us.”
