The hunt has barely started for the killer of Lizzie Stride whose body was found at 1am in Driffield’s Yard in Burner-street, Whitechapel.

Now City Constable Edward Watkins on his night patrol stumbles across the mutilated body of a second woman less than a mile away, later identified as Catherine Eddowes who had been locked up in a police cell at Bishopsgate in safety—just 45 minutes earlier.

The constable discovers her body in a pool of blood at 1.44am in Mitre Square, Aldgate.

He calls for help at Kearley & Tongue tea warehouse a few yards away.

But night watchman George Morris, an ex-policeman himself, had noticed nothing unusual.

Another watchman, George Clapp at 5 Mitre-square, and off-duty policeman Richard Pearse who lives at 3 Mitre-square, have also seen or heard nothing this night.

Catherine Eddowes was killed and mutilated between 1.35 and 1.40am, it is later recorded. Police surgeon Frederick Brown, who arrives at 2am, believes she was murdered within the past half-hour.

He notes her arms by the side of her body, both palms facing upwards, her dress and petticoat drawn up above her stomach, her thighs exposed and naked.

Catharine’s bonnet is at the back of her head, her face badly disfigured—and her throat slashed.

Her intestines are drawn out and placed over the right shoulder, a piece about 2ft detached and placed between the body and left arm. Her left ear lobe and auricle are cut, her clotted blood spewed out across the pavement.

The body is still warm when the constable finds her at 1.44am just minutes after the killer escaped from the dim, gas-lit square, vanishing into the night.
