All rail services into east London and The City from Essex and the East Coast are being suspended until 9am Monday because of the overnight storm conditions.

Greater Anglia train operators have made the decision to stop services on all routes including London commuter lines into Liverpool Street via Stratford and Bethnal Green and into Fenchurch Street or through Barking, West Ham and Limehouse.

Commuters are being advised not to attempt to travel before 9am, when trains start running again with a reduced service, weather permitting, but with speed restrictions in place. Disruption to journeys is likely throughout the day.

The contingency plans are based on advise that high winds of up to 75mph have been forecast across the South East in the early morning.

“This presents a significant risk of falling trees or branches damaging railway equipment,” said a Greater Anglia rail spokesman. “It would severely limit our ability to respond safely and quickly to any incidents which may occur.”

The rail operators are working with Network Rail throughout the night to make sure lines open as soon as possible in the morning. Extra staff are being deployed across the region.

“We will run checks on all routes as soon as we’re able,” the rail spokesman added. “We want to make sure trains can run safely before we run any passenger services.”

Passengers are being urged to check latest travel information before setting out. Tickets dated for Monday can be used tonight or on Tuesday.

Up-to-the-minute travel advice is being given on Greater Anglia’s website [greateranglia.co.uk] and its Twitter feed [@greateranglia] throughout the morning.

Other train operators across the South East are also likely to be affected by storm conditions. Details are online at: http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/service_disruptions/60152.aspx
