STUDENTS have begun a sit-in at their university campus in London’s East End today (Tuesday) in a campaign against job cuts facing their lecturers.

They have taken over the cafeteria in the London Metropolitan University’s Whitechapel campus in Commercial Road.

It follows a strike by their lecturers last Thursday when the university’s campuses at Whitechapel, Aldgate, Moorgate and Holloway were brought to a 24-hour standstill in protest at 550 job cuts.

The university, with 34,000 students, is being forced to repay 50 million to Whitehall after auditors found drop-out rates were higher than stated. The university has responded with job cuts which would put a-quarter of its staff at risk.
