BELTS are being tightened as the credit crunch bites—but a new swapping craze sweeping America has now landed in London’s East End.

Hoarders descended on the Star of Bethnal Green pub on Sunday, hoping to bag themselves new gear without spending a penny by swapping their unwanted possessions.

Scores of people turned up to the Swap Till You Drop’ event at the boozer in Bethnal Green Road to exchange some of their surplus stuff for someone else’s.

They paid £5 a head and brought at least three unwanted items to get the chance to swap redundant clothes, shoes, books, CDs, DVDs, games and other objects.

The new American trend of swishing’ has made its way over to this side of the pond and even has its own BBC2 programme, Twiggy’s Frock Exchange, in which the 1960s icon oversees a fashion swapshop.

Those taking part at the Swap Till you Drop event at the Star also brought along 15 minute compilation CDs of their favourite music to listen to while they swapped, munched on Thai food and sipped drinks from the bar.
