BUDDING young artists were celebrating their winning creations after battling it out in a competition to find the best window mural.

Around 30 finalists from five schools in Tower Hamlets faced the judges yesterday after designing a piece of artwork to feature on the front of EDF Energy Networks' substation in Whitechapel.

The talented seven to nine-year-olds worked with artist Rosie Mayhew to create paintings based on a range of themes including old and new buildings, entertainment, textiles and markets.

And the ten winners were announced at Wilton's Music Hall on Thursday after being selected by a group of judges, including Advertiser reporter Gemma Collins, Tower Hamlets mayor Ahmed Omer and Tate International Council member Dasha Shenkman.

Barry Hatton, EDF Energy Networks director of capital programme, said: "We have worked closely with the schools and we hope their work will be an exciting part of this street scene, reflecting the cultural and historical heritage of this part of London."

EDF Energy Networks joined forces with founder of the arts charity Concordia Foundation Gillian Humphreys as part of its work on upgrading the substation in Osborne Street.

Kids at St Paul's Primary, Osmani Primary, Shapla Primary, Christ Church Primary, and Blue Gate Fields Junior School all took part and the runners-up were presented with postcards of their designs.

The chosen paintings will now be transformed into murals that will blown-up to fit in the windows of the substation.
