A debate on the morality of tax dodging triggered calls for a culture of naming and shaming when it was held in Spitalfields last week.
The debate was staged at Christ Church Spitalfields, and coincided with the arrival of the Christian Aid tax justice bus in East London ahead of a UK tour aimed at raising awareness of the issue of tax avoidance.
The panel included political commentetator and writer Peter Oborne, and was chaired by former Canon of St Paul’s Cathedral Giles Fraser.
Mr Oborne said during the debate: “We have a duty to shame companies that don’t pay their taxes, that don’t fulfil their civic duties.”
Reverend Andy Rider, who is rector of Spitalfields Church, said after the event: “It was refreshing to hear debated wisely and with deep concern an issue that is too often dishonestly hidden away to the benefit of a few.”
