A Team GB Olympic boxer visited an amateur boxing club in the East End last week after it became the 1,000th club to sign up to the Join in Local Sport campaign ahead of this summer’s Games.

Bantamweight fighter Luke Campbell took time out from his Olympic preparations to visit Broad Street boxing club in Shadwell.

The visit was part of the Join in Local Sport campaign, an Olympic initiative aimed at promoting participation in local sports clubs, particularly over the weekend of August 18/19.

Mr Campbell, 24, who is England’s first amateur European champion for 47 years stressed the importance of amateur clubs to his career.

He said: “Clubs like this are vital to the survival of the sport, but they can only keep going thanks to the volunteers who give their time for others. That’s why I’m delighted to be supporting the Join In weekend so we can make sure grassroots sport really does get an Olympic boost this summer.”
