A teenager moped rider has been left fighting for his life following a hit and run crash in Whitechapel this morning.

The 19-year-old man was thrown off his moped after a dark-coloured car, which is believed to be a Volkswagen Passat, smashed into his vehicle in Cavell Street at 12.18am.

The driver failed to stop at the scene and sped away down Stepney Way.

Police called to the scene found the man suffering from a head injury and he is currently in a critical condition in hospital.

Detective Sergeant Mike Stubbins, from Tower Hamlets CID, said: “A young man has been left in a critical condition and it is of paramount importance that anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information comes forward.

“We would urge anyone who may have seen this vehicle or witnessed the collision to get in contact immediately.”

Anyone with any information should call Tower Hamlets CID on 020 7275 4550 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
