The number of teenage pregnancies in Tower Hamlets is falling, according to the latest statistics.

Data released by the Office of National Statistics shows there were 24.3 pregnancies per 1,000 under 18s in 2012, a drop of 4.2 compared to the previous year.

The conception rate has fluctuated in recent years, reaching a high of 57,9 pregnancies per 1,000 women in 1998, but is currently at an all-time low and below the current national average of 27.7 pregnancies per 1,000 women.

Dr Yvonne Doyle, regional director for PHE London, described the latest figures as “encouraging”.

“Improved access to sexual health services in the capital, along with greater access to contraception, has been crucial to the reduction in teenage pregnancy,” she said.

“Sex and relationship education both in school and out of school is vital and will be key to London ensuring that this downward trend is maintained. PHE will be working with local authorities and the NHS in London to help them make further progress.”
