Tower Hamlets is to take part in a new initiative which will allow sites earmarked for large-scale development to put up temporary modular housing to make use of the land while plans are being developed.

The homes will be used on what has been dubbed “meanwhile sites”, including regeneration schemes and transport sites where redevelopment is planned several years into the future.

A not-for-profit company is going to provide the homes to participating London councils.

The £11 million project is being supported by the Greater London Authority Innovation Fund.

Tower Hamlets mayor John Biggs said: “This is an innovative, cost effective way to bring urgently needed temporary accommodation to London.

“I am glad that Tower Hamlets is leading the way in this initiative, working in partnership with the GLA and other London boroughs.

“We are at the forefront of providing solutions to the housing crisis.”
