A parade from Brick Lane to the festival in Weavers Fields, Bethnal Green sparked off Sunday’s celebrations, which also included music from top Bangla musicians.

Folk singer Ashik came over from Bangladesh to perform in front of the 40,000-strong crowd, with a mixture of local and international acts also taking to the stage throughout the day.

Other activities included Bengali arts and crafts workshops, storytelling sessions and stalls selling traditional clothes, food and toys.

Mayor John Biggs said: “I am very proud of the fact that Tower Hamlets is home to the Mela, which is the biggest Bengali festival outside of south Asia.
