SCUFFLES broke out as thousands of demonstrators packed the streets around the Bank of England in today’s mass protest against the G20 summit.
They began congregating outside Liverpool Street main-line station at Bishopsgate this morning, then marched to The Bank waving banners and many blowing whistles and chanting.
Many activists came from London’s deprived East End, including protesters from Whitechapel’s Rampart social centre run by squatters. Groups arrived from all over London and the South East.

Police and security guards are on the roof of the Bank building opposite the Mansion House and two police helicopters have been circling overhead.
The normally busy junction was closed to traffic as thousands of marchers converged from all directions.

Graffiti was scribbled in yellow on the side of the Bank of England which read: “People will stop robbing banks when banks stop robbing people.”
Other banks in nearby Moorgate were shut for the day, as a precaution against militant protesters.
Some marchers covered their faces to avoid being filmed by police. Many are going on to the US embassy in Grosvenor Square for a 2pm protest.
