GLA TAKES POST OFFICE TO THE HIGH COURT

THE Greater London Authority has today (Thurs) taken its campaign to force the Post Office to rethink its London-wide closures to the High Court. Both the GLA and Mayor are seeking a judicial review over lack of a full public consultation to save 171 on the London 'hit' list, including five in the East End. The Town Halls' lobby organisation London Councils today joined the fight because of "the disproportionate number of closures compared to the rest of the country."

INQUEST OPENS ON MUM KILLED IN COP CHASE

THE inquest opened at Poplar this morning (Thurs) into a toddler's mum killed in Sunday's police chase in Bethnal Green. The hearing was adjourned after formal identification of 31-year-old Raquel Williams, from Leyton, who died at the scene at 4.30am from multiple injuries. Her 19-month-old baby girl was among four trapped in the six-vehicle pile-up. A man appeared in court on Wednesday over the incident and a couple aged 21 are on police bail.

HUNT FOR ESCAPED PRISONER AFTER SNATCH RAID

DETECTIVES hunting escaped prisoner Tony Albert Turner, known to have connections in East London and Essex, are advising the public not to approach him. The 27-year-old facing armed robbery charges legged it from Barking magistrates' court on Wednesday (April 2) in a daring 'snatch' raid when guards were threatened by two gunmen.

SPECIAL BRANCH HOLD COUNCILLOR AT AIRPORT

TOWER Hamlets councillor Oliur Rahman was detained at Heathrow airport for 30 minutes yesterday (Wed) under the Prevention of Terrorism Act after returning from Egypt. He was quizzed by Special Branch at Terminal 4 on why he attended the 6th Cairo anti-war conference and what contacts he made.

10 IN RING FOR 'MAYOR OF LONDON' TITLE FIGHT

THE final list has closed for 'wannabe Mayor of London' candidates who are after Ken Livingstone's job, Ken included. There are 10 in the ring for the 'hot seat' in the May 1 elections, when the London Assembly also goes to the polls.

ROBIN HOOD'S FUTURE NOW HANGS IN BALANCE

FAMILIES have challenged Tower Hamlets council plans to redevelop Poplar's massive 1970s Robin Hood Gardens estate. They're worried about being rehoused elsewhere with new tenancy agreements and losing their 'security of tenure' rights. It was being reconsidered at last night's council Cabinet meeting.

CHANCELLOR BARRED FROM PUB OVER BEER DUTY

CHANCELLOR Alistair Darling has been barred from The Albion pub at Haggerston after slapping another 4p a pint tax in the Budget. Guv'nor Dave Chapman has written to him saying he's no longer welcome if he ever turns up.
