Volunteers have been out tidying up the Regent’s Canal in east London to stop buddleias getting out of ciontrol and damanging buildings.
They joined staff from the Canal & River Trust and Veolia council refuge contractors as part of the Keep Britain Tidy campaign alongside Bethnal Green’s Lark Row Community Gardens.
The volunteers met at Old Ford Lock in Hackney Wick before travelling by canal boat to Lark Row, near the bridge linking Cambridge Heath Road to Mare Street in South Hackney, to cut back a huge amount of vegetation, mainly overgrown buddleia bushes which can root in brickwork and damage buildings if left unchecked.
The shrubbery had started to grow over the railings alongside the waterway—so it was time to get rid of it.
