Tories have picked a Tower Hamlets councillor to run for the City & East seat on the London Assembly when Labour’s John Biggs steps down after 16 years.

Chris Chapman from the Isle of Dogs, who represents Blackwall and Cubitt Town on the local authority, has been selected by local Conservatives as their London Assembly candidate next May.

The media and publishing professional is the Tower Hamlets Tory Opposition group’s deputy leader at the Town Hall, where Biggs took over as the newly-elected executive mayor in June.

Cllr Chapman, who advocates more ‘localism’ powers to be devolved, is running for the Assembly constituency that stretches from the City of London out to Dagenham, which includes Tower Hamlets and neighbouring boroughs of Newham and Barking & Dagenham.
