Steam train enthusiasts are lining the track tomorrow morning (Sat) when a ‘new build’ engine thunders through east London.

The A1 ‘Pacific’ locomotive 60163 Tornado is hauling a charter train along the Barking to Gospel Oak Line in the morning for Steam Dreams rail-tour operator.

It runs via the Tilbury line, due to engineering works between Upminster, and pick up passengers for the first time at Barking. All seats have been sold.

But those wanting to see it can catch a glimpse at Dagenham Dock 9.59am, Ripple Lane 10.02am, Barking 10.06am, Barking station junction 10.12am, Woodgrange Park 10.28am, Leyton Midland Road 10.35am, South Tottenham 10.45am and Harringay Park 10.52am.

The Tornado got all steamed up for the first time in 2008, after a 19 year project to fund and build the locomotive. It was constructed as the 50th A1 loco rather than a replica.

None of the original 49 A1s built from 1948 to 49 were saved from the scrap yard after steam was withdrawn by British Rail in 1968. But in 1990, a group of enthusiasts founded a trust to return this missing link.

The Tornado has twice hauled the Royal Train since 2008, taken part in a BBC Top Gear race with Jeremy Clarkson and had its own TV documentary programme made called ‘Absolutely Chuffed’.
