The UK’s most popular listings magazine is recommending Tower Hamlets’ street markets to tourists and Londoners alike.
Petticoat Lane Market, Columbia Road Market and Billingsgate Market are all highlighted in the Time Out special. The cockney cuisine served at Tubby Isaacs in Petticoat Lane Market also features.
Established in 1919, Tubby Isaacas’ jellied eels are an East End delicacy that have brought the stall many loyal customers. The family business, which is now in its fourth generation, has moved with the times introducing crab stix and ocean pinx in the 80s, and more recently crayfish and octopus.
Tower Hamlets has the most council-run markets in the capital and their importance within the borough means they play a key role in the borough’s bid to get city status.
The council believes the Time Out recognition of places in Tower Hamlets on it’s things to do list will help its bid to become the UK’s next city, as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012.
Markets are big business in Tower Hamlets, according to the council, generating around �21 million per year.
The borough’s ten major markets operate 364 days and involve about 2,000 pitches
