Tower Hamlets is able to apply for 100 more highly sought-after 2012 Olympic tickets.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games has recently written to the six host boroughs offering 100 more tickets for each borough on top of the 100 tickets they have already bought. Locog took the decision to offer additional tickets to host boroughs after not all London’s 33 boroughs took up an original offer of applying for tickets, a spokesman said.

The reallocation of tickets will allow access to such events as the opening ceremony and the finals of men’s 100 metres, cycling and gymnastics.

Many of the dozen boroughs that did not take up their allocation reportedly did so on the grounds that they did not want public officials to benefit, and they believed the tickets would be returned to the public pool for general sale.

Responding to the criticism the Locog spokesman said a million more tickets across all events will become available for the public from December through to the Games.

Tower Hamlets has already bought 100 tickets for the Games next year which it has promised will all be allocated to residents rather than council officials.
