A TOWER Hamlets council candidate was recovering in hospital this week after she was attacked by a dog during her election canvassing.

Tory Emma Jones who is standing for ward councillor in St Katherine's & Wapping had to have surgery on her arm after she was mauled by what was believed to be a Staffordshire Bull Terrier on Saturday.

The 32-year-old was handing out leaflets and knocking on doors in Flinders House in Green Bank, Wapping on Saturday when the dog came pounding out of a flat.

She tried to back down the stairs but the animal jumped on her, forcing her against the wall and bit through her shirt.

The owner tried to pull the dog off but it managed to grab hold of her arms.

Dr Jones who lives in Milk Yard in Wapping told the Advertiser: "It just happened so quickly.

"The dog seemed to lock its jaw onto my arm and would not get off. It was hanging off my arm. Apparently the owner was trying to pull it off but I can't even remember that as it was all quite shocking.

"I couldn't feel the pain until I got into the ambulance as I was concentrating so much on the dog."

Dr Jones was taken to the Royal London Hospital where she had plastic surgery on Saturday night on her right arm and was given stitches in her left.

She was discharged on Monday evening.

A police spokeswoman said: "Police received a call on Saturday at 12.18pm to a report of a female having been bitten by a dog.

"The police are investigating.
