An award for new sustainable development has been handed to Tower Hamlets Council after it delivered 3,000 homes meeting targets in the past six years.

Environmental development group the British Research Establishment has recognised the council for delivering homes which meet standards issued in 2007.

Tower Hamlets’ cabinet member for housing Cllr Rabina Khan said: “Ensuring that new homes are sustainable – through good insulation, reduced energy and water use and responsibly sourced materials – ensures that we’re considering the environment as well as reducing the cost of running a home for residents.”

The code rates characteristics such as natural light, energy use and insulation, and is designed to reduce carbon emissions from new homes
