The opening of a temporary beach on Greenwich peninsula has been met with fierce opposition from a member of Tower Hamlets council.

Conservative member for Blackwall and Cubbitt Town, Peter Golds, has hit out at the plans, claiming that although it has been organised by Greenwich council, it is residents of Tower Hamlets who will bear the brunt of a summer of scheduled festivities,

“We have had a long history of noise problems from these sorts of events,” he said.

“The majority of people affected by this are in Tower Hamlets, as opposed to Greenwich, and if there are complaints then we will put in a request for the licence to be withdrawn.”

Councillor Golds also confirmed that council officers would be monitoring noise to ensure it did not exceed agreed levels.

The beach will open on Sunday July 1, and will host live music and other events throughout the summer
