Two green fingered residents from Tower Hamlets have been named Show Champions at a flower show held for the first time.

Ken Davies and Melvyn Smith, the main gardeners at the Organic Garden at Winterton House in Stepney, scooped the title after accumulating most points for their vegetable, fruit, flower and herb displays at the East London Flower Show.

Billed as the first flower show for Londoners in the capital some 30 gardeners took part in the show, organised by The East London Garden Society, and held at Newham City Farm in Beckton last weekend.

Melvyn said: “We’re absolutely trilled to have won. It’s thanks not just to us, but all the work put into the garden by residents and allotments holders attached to the garden.

“The garden has been transformed from being an unloved space three years ago into a thriving garden with vegetables, flowers, and poultry.”

Cranbrook Community Garden in Globe Town won the prize for The Best Garden in East London, followed by the Eric Estate Garden in Mile End.
