Pupils across Tower Hamlets are celebrating their GCSE results under the new 1-9 grading system.

82 per cent of pupils achieved grades 9-4 in English, with 70pc achieving 9-4 grades in maths, the equivalent of the old A-C grades.

Maud McLaughlin achieved eight Grade 9 GCSEs and two A* grades, one of 732 pupils in the UK who achieved straight grades 9s.

Mayor John Biggs visited Swanlea school in Whitechapel where 73pc achieved maths and English grades 9 to 4.

Mr Biggs said: “I’m so pleased for the students who received their GCSE grades to see their hard work pay off. It’s always an adjustment to work to a new system, the results across the borough are very pleasing.”

Cllr Danny Hassell, cabinet member for children, schools and young people, said: “I’m very pleased that the hard work and commitment of students, teachers and support staff has paid off with this set of results.”
