Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced the date this morning after a 20-minute meeting with the Queen at Buckingham Palace in which he asked her to dissolve parliament.

East Enders will also be voting for their local councillors on May 6 and deciding on whether they want a mayoral system in Tower Hamlets.
