The new chairman of housing body Tower Hamlets Homes Board has described his delight at “coming home” to the East End where he has long had family ties.

Barry Simons has been appointed to the position heading up the organisation, which mananges Tower Hamlets council’s housing stock, in place of cllr Kabir Ahmed, who has been in charge since February. He has previously worked as a director of housing for Hammersmith and Fulham, Brent and Newham, as well as interim chief executive of Redbridge Homes.

“This role feels like coming home”, he said.

“My mother was born and brought up in Stepney and my father worked on the London docks so I am delighted to be able to make a difference to people in the East End.”

Further appointments announced include that of independent board member Ann Lucas as well as Margaret Cox and Shamsul Hoque as resident board members.
