Thursday 8 March is International Women’s Day – a day to mark the social, economic and political progress of women across the globe.

Here’s a list of events happening across Tower Hamlets over the next week celebrating the day’s theme, PressforProgress.

Tower Hamlets Council’s International Women’s Day: 35-47 Bethnal Green Rd, London E1 6LA, Thursday 8, 10am-3pm

A drop-in session with specialist teams advising on the services the council has on offer to women. Information will be available on helping women entrepreneurs, apprenticeships, employment and training, money matters, childcare and housing advice, English language lessons and appointments for free health checks. Entry is free.

Today’s Suffragettes: St Matthias Community Centre, 113 Poplar High Street, E14 0AE, Friday 9, 12-3pm

Looking at women who are making modern day waves in the status quo, ‘Today’s Suffragettes’ will tell the stories of women like Claire Mosley, the head of Care4Calais, investigating the difference one person can make. Entry is free.

A Journey from Dash to Diganta: Poplar Union, 2 Cotall Street, E14 6TL, Friday 9, 6.30-9.30pm

Talks, music performances and poetry will explore the plight of south Asian women in the UK, all organised by East London women’s rights movement, Nari Chetona. Entry is free.

Celebrating Bengali Women in Britain: Kobi Nazrul Centre, 30 Hanbury Street E1, Saturday 10, 2-5pm

The achievements of British Bengali women will be celebrated through workshops, talks, music performances, dances and poetry readings. Entry is free.

Be Inspired to Vote: Bancroft TMC, 12 Wickford Street E1 5QN, Saturday 10, 7-10pm

Councillor Rakhia Ismail and Councillor Amina Al will be leading the discussion themed ‘Women and Voting’. They will be talking about their achievements and how progress can be made for Somalian women. It’ll be followed by a Q&A, Somali dancing and refreshments. Admission is £10, open to women only.

International Women’s Day Celebration: Mulberry and Bigland Green Centre, 15 Richard Street, E1 2JP, Wednesday 14, 10am-6pm

Mulberry School for Girls is hosting a day of activities designed to inspire women. There will be speakers and discussion spaces, music, dance and spoken word performances, and local women’s services will also be presenting their work, including Toynbee Hall, Workpath, TH Domestic Violence and Tower Hamlets VCs. Entry is free.
