Boris Johnson will be joined by Mayor of Tower Hamlets Lutfur Rahman when the Olympic torch arrives in the capital for the first time this evening.

Royal Marine Martyn Williams will absail 180 feet from a Royal Navy Sea King helicopter into the 11th century Tower of London carrying the torch at around 8pm.

It will then be put under guard for the night, before embarking on a tour of London’s Olympic boroughs, Tower Hamlets, Newham, Hackney, Waltham Forest and Barking and Dagenham over the course of the weekend.

However, members wishing to see the lowering of the flame in person face disappointment, as they have been warned the view will be obscured from the ground, and the best way to watch the arrival is on television.

The flame will be in Tower Hamlets from approximately 1.50pm tomorrow afternoon, before leaving the borough at around 4pm.
