The mayor of Tower Hamlets recognised people who’ve been trained to tackle discrimination.

John Biggs presented certificates to 10 ‘No Place for Hate Champions’ on Monday after they completed their training.

They’ll join 128 other residents who’ve completed the training since 2008.

“I was proud to meet our newest champions and to hear about their plans to further build community cohesion, peace and tolerance in their neighbourhoods,” he said.

“Diversity is one of our greatest strengths in Tower Hamlets. We will continue to work together with our partners to stamp out all forms of discrimination.”

Previous award winnners have gone on to organise more than 1,000 events to raise awareness of hate crime and encourage people to report it.

Councillor Asma Begum, cabinet member for safety, said: “Our champions are incredibly passionate about their work to tackle all forms of hate. I am proud of the work that has been delivered so far and look forward to hearing about upcoming projects.”
