A MAYORAL referendum in Tower Hamlets will cost up to �250,000.
The referendum for a directly elected mayor serving four years like those in neighbouring Hackney and Newham has been triggered by a petition of 10,233 voters.
The Respect party campaigned hard to get enough signatures.
If voters go to the polls just to decide if they want to have a directly elected mayor the referendum will cost �250,000.
If the vote is combined with council elections in May it would cost just an extra �70,000 on top of the existing costs of the ballot to elect 51 councillors.
The council is holding a special meeting on Wednesday to discuss the referendum and whether to hold it on May 6, the preferred choice of the ruling Labour party or February 4 2010.
