A MAYORAL referendum in Tower Hamlets will cost up to 250,000.
The referendum for a directly elected mayor serving four years like those in neighbouring Hackney and Newham has been triggered by a petition of 10,233 voters.
The Respect party campaigned hard to get enough signatures.
If voters go to the polls just to decide if they want to have a directly elected mayor the referendum will cost 250,000.
If the vote is combined with council elections in May it would cost just an extra 70,000 on top of the existing costs of the ballot to elect 51 councillors.
The council is holding a special meeting on Wednesday to discuss the referendum and whether to hold it on May 6, the preferred choice of the ruling Labour party or February 4 2010.
