Drivers expected to participate in a “dangerous” car rally through central London this weekend have been urged to stay away by police.

Tower Hamlets officers will have powers to seize vehicles and and break up the London Tunnel Run 2017 – which is expected to be attended by thousands – if it goes ahead on Sunday evening, according to a police statement issued online.

Although organisers haven’t yet disclosed their proposed route, a facebook group has promised a “huge static event” at 8pm before cars take on a “mix of eight tunnels, various bridges and famous landmarks” on a three-hour jaunt.

Previous events have shown drivers speeding and performing burnouts in front of hoards of onlookers on public roads.

Residents in Tower Hamlets have also made numerous complaints in recent years about excess noise and anti-social behaviour.

Tower Hamlets police have said they will have a “large number of officers” on duty with patrols covering various tunnels including Canary Wharf and Westferry Circus.

In a statement, they wrote: “Any unnecessary noise, antisocial behaviour or traffic offences will be dealt with robustly to prevent disruption to the community and other road users.”

It then goes on to say: “Please be warned and do not come to the area for this event and risk losing your car.”

Extra resources from Tower Hamlets council will also be used to deter participants and close roads.

CCTV footage will also be used afterwards to identify and prosecute any offenders.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: “We are aware of this event, which runs every year and sees groups gather at various locations to drive together in convoy along a specified route.

“Previously police in Tower Hamlets have experienced numerous calls relating to excessive vehicle noise, anti-social behaviour and inconsiderate driving. There have also on occasions been reports of dangerous and reckless driving.”

He added: “Any unnecessary noise, anti-social behaviour and traffic offences will be dealt with robustly and proportionately to prevent disruption to the community and road users.”
