Pupils in Tower Hamlets brought home the borough’s best ever GCSE results, it has been confirmed.
The proportion of youngsters hitting the target of five GCSEs at grade C or above – including English and maths – reached 65.3 per cent.
That represents a rise of 3.4 per cent on last year’s figure of 61.9 per cent.
Schools, teachers and pupils were praised by Tower Hamlets Mayor Lutfur Rahman for bucking national trends, which saw a slight drop in the proportion of high flying pupils on results day in August.
In English, 73.8 per cent of youngsters brought home top grades – up by 2.6 per cent from last year, and 10 per cent higher than the national average.
Maths students also excelled, with 75.4 per cent hitting the target, compared to a national average of 57.7 per cent.
