Squeezed households have been given a drop of good news as a regulator rejected a planned eight per cent hike in water bills.
Residents across the East End would have been hit if provider Thames Water’s planned £29 rise in average annual bills had been approved.
But water regulator OFWAT rejected its application, which it said was a result of its facing extra costs of £291million per year since prices were set in 2009.
The news was welcomed by Tower Hamlets Labour group leader Cllr Sirajul Islam, who wrote to OFWAT urging it to block the hike.
“There is a cost of living crisis across Tower Hamlets and any increase to water bills would simply squeeze household budgets further leaving even more people struggling to make ends meet,” he said.
