Pupils in Tower Hamlets bucked the national trend, with several schools recording increases in numbers of pupils achieving A*-C grades.

Nationally, these numbers fell by 0.4 per cent, but George Green’s school on the Isle of Dogs managed to better last year’s results by an impressive six per cent, despite ongoing controversy over grade boundaries.

Those achieving A*-C grades, including English and Maths, jumped from 48 per cent last year to 54 per cent this year.

Tanzina Khatum, was among the high-achievers at the school with five A*s, seven As and one B. She said: “I felt sick last night and couldn’t sleep until 3:30am, but when I opened the envelope I had an overjoyed feeling.

“I didn’t want to let anyone down as they were all praying for me. I enjoyed all my subjects so much, and my teachers were great - they really supported me.”

Principal Kenny Frederick said: “Our pupils and staff have worked incredibly hard to achieve these fantastic results and I’m immensely proud of them. It’s another massive step forward for the school and shows just what can be achieved through hard work and perseverance.”

Landon Park School also confirmed that its success rate was up on last year, with preliminary figures showing a three per cent increase in pupils achieving A*-C grades.
