PARENTS and teachers have been scrutinising the latest primary school league tables, out this week.

Tower Hamlets squeaked in just above the national average, ahead of counties like Herefordshire and East Sussex, but well behind London's top borough, leafy Richmond.

St Elizabeth Catholic Primary School in Bethnal Green came out tops, with 100 per cent of pupils scoring Level 4 in English and Science, and 94 per cent getting Level 4 in Maths.

St Edmund's RC Primary in Millwall, Bonner Primary in Bethnal Green, English Martyrs in Wapping, and Osmani Primary in Whitechapel were also all in the top five, ranked by their average point scores.

Bottom of the class was Christchurch CofE in Brick Lane, where only half the pupils were up to standard in Maths, and one third were below par in English.

It was joined by Stebon Primary in Bow Common and Mayflower Primary in Limehouse, where only half the children had mastered basic science.
