THE East End will be getting 17 new council homes after a £1.7 million boost from the Government.

Tower Hamlets council was awarded the cash after successfully bidding for a share of £127 million of government money.

The funds are being allocated to 49 local authorities across the country as part of the biggest council housing programme in two decades.

Most of the homes will be three or more bedrooms to help meet the borough's demand for larger homes and will be completed by March 2011.

Housing councillor Marc Francis said: "This successful bid is part of the council's strategy to tackle overcrowding and these homes could well be the first of more to come.
