Hundreds flocked to events taking place across Tower Hamlets to mark Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tying the knot on Saturday at the St George’s Chapel on the grounds of Windsor Castle.

From thrilling fairground rides and sporting activities for all the family, to arts and crafts and a bungee run, bunting was put up around Mile End Park as residents were able to mark the occasion.

Neighbours in Poplar, one of five LinkAge Plus centres funded by the council and Tower Hamlets Clinical Commissioning Group to run activities and improve the well being of older residents, congratulated the happy couple at St Matthias Community Centre, Poplar High Street with a special party.

A traditional East End knees-up to bring back memories of the good old days was held by residents at the Patriot Square Estate in Bethnal Green as well as a gathering at Raine’s House, Raine Street, in Wapping.

Organiser of the party at the Patriot Square Estate, Kate Eberwein, said: “We all get on well and the Royal Wedding is a nice excuse for a party which will be a positive way of bringing those who have lived on the estate for a while, and new residents together.”

Mayor John Biggs also attended a few of the celebratory events around the borough, to welcome the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex with residents.

He said: “All year round, Tower Hamlets events bring our communities together in our parks and open spaces.

“The royal wedding was a great chance for residents from all backgrounds to meet others and strengthen ties by having fun at a street party, a community event or by attending the picnic at Mile End Park.

“The council awarded small grants to tenants and residents groups to get together with their neighbours and hold their own celebrations.

“We are delighted to have been part of this momentous national occasion.”
