TOWN Hall parking chiefs made a £4 million profit fining motorists in London's deprived East End last year, latest Tower Hamlets council accounts show.

They issued £12.7m tickets for parking and 'moving vehicle' offences, which was 25 per cent more than they raked in during 2006-07.

The accounts show salaries for its army of parking wardens, CCTV operators and managers was more than £4m, while another £4m went on other suppliers such as its tow-away 'merchants' ELV.

By law, the £4m profit has to be 'reinvested' in highways and transport projects.
