TOWN Hall bosses are going green’ with new white street lights in East London.
They are testing more energy efficient’ lighting to be installed in Hackney and Shoreditch and have commissioned a trial of several different types that use light-emitting diodes which give out a clear white light and cut carbon emissions.
Hackney Council cabinet member Alan Laing said: “We are introducing more green and sustainable lighting because residents want us to reduce Hackney’s contribution to global warming.”
FEEL SAFE
But the high-tech lighting to brighten pavements will also help the public feel safe after dark in a borough rife with street violence and muggings.
Several pilot light’ sites have been selected for the new technology, including dingy alleys and dimly-lit parts of housing estates, following a trial run last year along Homerton Terrace and in Shoreditch Park.
