THE latest attempts by Tower Hamlets Homes and our elected councillors are to dispose of green space on the Brunton Wharf Estate at Limehouse to expand a primary school and a private development.

Most of this land is to be transferred to the school for a nominal sum with no indication that any of this income will be used to improve our estate.

Council surveyors arrived on our estate two years ago who were the first to inform us of Tower Hamlets’ intentions.

Since then there has been no formal meeting of residents to discuss it. What there has been just recently is one late-notice ad hoc meeting between residents and Cllr Choudhury on May 28, when we made our objections known. We asked him to represent those views to the authorities.

Specifically we asked that he get a meeting of council officers deferred as we felt it had no legitimacy as they had failed to consult residents. Needless to say, this meeting went ahead on June 2 anyway.

Anonymous notices have gone about on the estate recently, proposing a meeting between tenant-resident representatives, ward councillors, the school and the Town Hall planning department.

But we have no representatives. According to council rules, a tenant-resident association must be elected annually by a properly constituted AGM. No such meetings have taken place on the Brunton Wharf Estate in years!

This land is an important amenity for our estate and not to be bartered off. We are already hemmed in by overdevelopment over recent years. Green space right across the East End has diminished as Tower Hamlets council offers our publicly-owned land to developers.
