A SQUAD of Town Hall officers are getting policing powers to seize liquor or slap fines on anyone dropping litter in London’s East End.

Tower Hamlets council has trained 10 of its staff as enforcers’ to tackle louts and rubbish dumping on the streets and in parks and open spaces.

They have completed their training this week and are booked’ to receive accreditation from the East End’s top cop, Borough Commander Paul Rickett, at a Town Hall ceremony next Thursday (November 12).

The council’s Lead member for the environment, Abdal Ullah, said: “People want more officers on the streets and that is exactly what we’re doing.”

The Tower Hamlets Enforcement Officers knows as THEOs’ will patrol in a distinctive high visibility uniforms. Their accreditation gives them power to issue fixed penalty notices for anti-social behaviour on the streets, in parks, open spaces and housing estates.

They can seize alcohol from under-18s and make sure highways and pavements are kept neat and tidy.
