Figures released today reveal how much time drivers spend stuck in traffic in Tower Hamlets and it’s actually news.

According to the data by the Department for Transport (DfT), for every mile a motorists spends on an A road in the borough they will be delayed by 110 seconds.

This adds around nine minutes on a journey of five miles or if your journey is 20 miles you’ll be held up for additional 37 minutes.

However these latest statistics, covering 2017, show there has been a fall of two per cent on the previous year.

Despite this motorists were forced to endure average travelling times of just 16mph despite A roads speed limits ranging between 30mph to 70mph.

Queues can be caused by anything from fuel spills, emergency repairs and broken down lorries, to congestion during peak times.

The DfT recently announced it was investing up to £10million into a programme which will pass on up-to-date information about road works to sat-navs and navigation apps.

It will allow councils and utility companies to quickly notify users on road closures or delays, by updating Google Maps or Citymapper in real time.

Roads Minister, Jesse Norman, said: “Roadworks can often be frustrating for motorists, especially when they cause hold-ups at busy times and delay journeys.

“We want to reduce this disruption and delay, and Street Manager is just one of a number of actions we are taking so that local authorities and utility companies can better plan and manage their roadworks.”

Hopefully this will make drivers journeys less stressful but until then being held up in traffic will continue to be the norm.
