Jewish residents planted a tree in a ceremony in Canary Wharf to mark the Jewish festival of Tu B’Shvat, the Jewish new year for trees.

More than 30 children from Bnos Beis Yaakov Primary School in North West London attended the service in Jubilee Park, near Canary Wharf Estate, along with elderly local residents.

Representatives from Canary Wharf Group and other Canary Wharf-based companies also took part in the ceremony.

The tree will join the 1,000 trees already planted around the estate.

Scholars believe the festival originally marked the beginning of spring.

Danny Seliger, from Canary Wharf Group, who organised the event, said: “The tree planted today is symbolic for a number of reasons.

“The planting and accompanying lunch brings together Canary Wharf workers and the local community, including schoolchildren. It is very pleasing to see.”
