Former Coventry City winger happy to continue providing impact from the bench as long as O’s keep winning

Leyton Orient’s super-sub Blair Turgott is looking forward to seeing how the Brisbane Road club cope with the added pressure on them now they are the only team in League Two with a 100 per cent record this season.

A 3-2 win at Newport County on Saturday kept O’s top of the table with four league triumphs from four this year.

Next up for Ian Hendon’s team is Bristol Rovers, who are fourth in the standings with nine points.

They will provide a tough test in E10, but Turgott believes Orient can cope with the pressure that league leaders face.

He said: “With us winning games, teams are going to start watching us and we will get a bit of a reputation now.

“When you have a 100 per cent record, sides are going to want to beat us so we have got to show our mettle. The pressure can only be a good thing for us.

“We can’t see it as pressure, we have to thrive on that because if we want to get out of this league we have got to be handling it.

“Against Newport we didn’t put in our best performance, but we got the win, so that was good.”

Turgott’s introduction off the bench in South Wales helped Hendon’s men pick up another victory as he assisted Dean Cox’s winner at Rodney Parade.

He has provided a threat every time he has been involved as a substitute and is pushing to start against Rovers this weekend.

But if he is restricted to another role on the bench, he will be happy as long as he can contribute in a positive way again.

Turgott added: “When you do come on as a substitute, you look to make an impact. Hopefully I’ve become the impact man when I’ve played in the last two games.

“Whether it is starting or coming off the bench, I am just trying to do my bit for the team to help us get more wins.

“I think in a game like Newport, I am watching from the sides and looking at where I can come on and make that impact and how I can do it on the pitch.

“Fortunately it has paid off with the cross I produced for ‘Coxy’ to score, but everyone helped us get the points.”

Orient’s excellent start this season is down to a number of factors and the togetherness of the group has been vital.

Although Paul McCallum and Jay Simpson have three goals each, you can go through almost all of the team and everybody has played a part despite the season only being a few weeks old.

That will need to continue if Hendon’s men are to remain at the summit, but Turgott is confident it can stay that way.

He added: “The pressure does build when you’re winning games, but that can only be a good thing. I guess almost every match for the opposition is a cup final now because of our record.

“That is good for us and there should be no pressure. We know what we’ve got in our changing room in terms of quality. If we keep doing the right things we should get more wins.”
