Children at a school in Poplar received nutrition advice from a celebrity doctor as part of a special “Breakfast Club”.

Dr Anita Sturnham, host of TV show Embarrassing Bodies and the Alan Titchmarsh Show, swapped her stethoscope for a spoon to serve up a hot breakfast for students, parents and staff at Mayflower Primary School on Friday (June 20).

The visit was one of eleven across London in the London’s Biggest Breakfast drive, backed by the Magic104.5 radio station, Greggs bakery and London Mayor Boris Johnson’s Fund for London, to reach 2,500 children in 60 schools.

Dr Sturnham said: “Children need fuel to provide them with energy for a morning of learning, concentrating and playing. “Breakfast provides that fuel. Breakfast is vital for enhancing your child’s physical and mental performance, as well as their ability to learn.

“Studies also show that children who miss breakfast are more likely to be overweight and suffer from colds than those who have breakfast every day.”

Mayflower headteacher Dee Bleach said: ““We all enjoyed meeting Anita Sturnham. The children learnt that food really does feed the brain and gives them energy for a morning of learning.

“It really made Friday’s Breakfast Club special for us and got the message across that a healthy breakfast is vital for successful learning.”
