Two people were injured when a blaze broke out at a block of flats in London’s East End today.

A woman had to be rescued by fire crews using a ladder when she was trapped by smoke in the five-storey Newcourt House in Pott Street, Bethnal Green, at 4am.

The woman and a man who managed to get out before crews arrived were both taken by ambulance to hospital and treated for cuts and the effects of smoke, but were not thought to be seriously injured. Around 30 other tenants had to be evacuated from the block, but fire crews managed to contain the blaze to one flat and the families were later allowed back. The cause is being investigated.

Fire crews were also called to another blaze on Sunday less than a-quarter-of-a-mile away at the City View Hotel in Cambridge Heath Road, when three people were rescued. One man was rescued from the third-floor and treated at the scene for the effects of breathing smoke. Two others were led to safety from the fourth floor by fire-crews wearing breathing apparatus.
