Could you put a fundraising meal together in just 24 hours?
It sounds difficult, but that’s exactly what a group of 16 young people from social enterprise group Year Here managed to pull off on Friday night.
The inaugural Poplar Pot event saw the team cook a two course meal at St Matthias Church while representatives from two projects pitched to secure the £350 pot raised from ticket sales.
The cash was taken away by Mona Nashed’s sewing group, which allows women to socialise, improve language skills and grow in confidence.
The Bromley-by-Bow horticulture group, the other project bidding, didn’t go away empty-handed. They received £170 in bar takings and a promise of support from Year Here.
Cllr Khales Uddin Ahmed said: “The Poplar Pot is a groundbreaking initiative.
“This is the first time Poplar has ever come together in this way to celebrate the richness in the community and support the grassroots projects that make it such a dynamic place to live and work.”
