A woman and a child were rescued from a house fire in Whitechapel in the early hours of this morning.

Part of the ground floor of the house, in Lindley Street, was damaged in the blaze.

Fire crews from Shadwell and Bethnal Green fire stations were called just after 2am, and had the flames under control before 3am.

The woman and child were treated for shock at the scene by a crew from the London Ambulance Service.

The Metropolitan Police are investigating the cause of the fire.
