Give photographer Tyler Shields a sandy desert in California’s Death Valley, get volunteers to stand still on the burning sands, then throw powdered paint at them and see what happens.
You come up with a ‘science of colour’ that Tyler has caught on camera which is going on show in London’s East End in an all-digital art exhibition at the Dray Walk Gallery in Brick Lane on Friday.
He uses a Sony Xperia Tablet Z as his canvas for this very 21st century art show.
“Technology plays an important part in stimulating the imagination,” he tells you. “That’s why I’m using tablets and smartphones to combine my love of colour with technology.”
The volunteers he recruits have paint powder thrown at them which is snapped against a sandy or sky background. In one shot, he captures a cloud of red paint before it hits the human targets.
Tyler’s vivid hues explode against stark landscapes such as the deserts just a morning’s drive his Los Angeles studio.
Sony’s Catherine Cherry explained: “Attitudes to technology are constantly changing, like consumers’ hunger for original ideas, which is why we are pushing the boundaries in our designs.”
Shields’ Science of Colour opens Friday at the Dray Walk Gallery in Truman’s Brewery and runs until Sunday.
