A Travelodge billing itself as the “UK’s first comedy club hotel” opened in Bethnal Green today.

The hotel is above comedian Lee Hurst’s club in Cambridge Heath Road, and features toilet rolls with jokes printed on them to help guests get into the spirit of the place.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, chief executive of Travelodge Grant Hearn said: “We are glad to be playing a role in the continuing redevelopment of Bethnal Green

“We are also delighted to be located above Lee Hurst’s iconic comedy club. Over the years it has hosted many household name comedians and we are sure many of the comedians and their audiences will choose to stay at our hotel.”

The company said the new branch will bring 30 new jobs to the area, and up to £2million investment into the area each year.
